Sustainability management

For a long time, including in previous strategies, the main theme of our strategy has been “Sustainability is our trump card”. In Hansel, sustainability is an integral part of tendering, the work done during the contract period and related reporting. Our own operations are also sustainable, although the impact is rather limited due to the company’s small size and the nature of its operations. Hansel’s efficiency is based on the joint procurement it arranges and maintains for Finnish general government units.

We realise tendering in accordance with standardised processes. In connection with the preliminary report for each joint procurement procedure, we perform a risk analysis, segmentation and sustainability assessment, as well as rating the procurement from the perspectives of preparedness, data protection and information security. During the contract period, we focus on monitoring compliance with the contractual terms. The level of risk and the requirements for the procurement vary, so the chosen monitoring mechanism also changes depending on the procurement object. This entails at least dialogue and possibly a self-assessment by the contractual supplier and a documentation review, but the process may also include an independent third-party sustainability audit.

The core of the sustainability efforts is the sustainability team, which consists of a nine-person matrix organisation chaired by the Director of Finance, who is responsible for sustainability in the Executive Committee. The duties of the sustainability team are to improve sustainability-related processes, monitor related legislation, provide training to the employees and share information about sustainability. Hansel’s Board of Directors receives a sustainability update at each of its meetings as part of the Managing Director’s review.

“One of the sustainability team’s duties is to improve sustainability-related processes.”

In 2024, the sustainability team held regular meetings every two weeks, with the exception of holiday periods. The team actively engaged with stakeholders both nationally and internationally, and gave presentations on sustainability matters at various events. In the autumn of 2024, the sustainability team arranged four sustainability training sessions for the company’s employees on the following themes:

  • Sustainability in joint procurement and systems
  • Assessing impact and sustainability in customer-specific tendering
  • Hansel’s journey from GRI to ESRS
  • Management of sustainable procurement

CSRD changes reporting

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will also change Hansel’s sustainability reporting, even though Hansel is not subject to the mandatory reporting requirements because of its small size. In 2024, we familiarised ourselves with the content of the CSRD and started a double materiality analysis in line with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). We will provide reports compliant with the ESRS from 2025 onwards. From 2024, many of Hansel’s contracted suppliers are required to start ESRS-compliant reporting, and some of our customers are also switching to ESRS reporting.

In the autumn of 2024, we launched a new system and arranged 11 DMA workshops. We started by taking a moment to consider Hansel’s value chain and realised that we should assess matters from the perspectives of both Hansel’s own operations and joint procurement operations for the sake of clarity. The work will continue in 2025.

Emissions from Hansel’s own operations

Emissions from Hansel’s own operations have been calculated according to the GHG Protocol using the same limitations since 2020. Hansel’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions were zero. The increase in Scope 3 emissions was due to the procurement of new computers and screens in 2024. Emissions from business travel and waste management have decreased.

Emissions from Hansel’s joint procurement

The emissions from joint procurement are based on coefficients describing the average emissions of each product and service group, produced by specialists from the Finnish Environment Institute. The coefficients were updated in 2023 in cooperation with the Finnish Environment Institute and linked to the reporting data on joint procurement. The emission figures involve plenty of uncertainty because the coefficients are calculated mean values. However, even indicative procurement emission calculations are a valuable tool to help ensure the appropriate targeting of emissions reduction measures. Some of Hansel’s contracted suppliers perform accurate emission calculations and provide this information to their customers. Hansel does not collect this data centrally, at least for the time being, and uses the above-mentioned coefficients for its own calculations instead.

Joint procurement sales in euros increased in 2024 compared to 2023, but calculated emissions from joint procurement decreased. This is because procurement in 2024 focused on products and services with lower emissions than in the previous year.

Hansel’s sustainability reporting

The results of Hansel’s sustainability efforts are presented in the Sustainability Report, which is published annually in Finnish, Swedish and English, integrated into the Annual Report. Regarding sustainability, the report presents key information for 2024 and information about interesting events and sustainability achievements. The Sustainability Report for 2023 was published on 25 March 2023. The reports are prepared in accordance with the principles set out in the international GRI Standards. The standards Hansel uses are from 2021.

The report includes a table presenting the content of the report by materiality theme, the GRI Standards used, as well as where the information can be found in the report. If a piece of information is unavailable, it is mentioned in the table alongside the grounds for not including it. Some information is provided in the financial statements.

The report has been created by Hansel’s communications unit in cooperation with advertising agency SST. The entire sustainability team participates in the report’s preparation, and it is approved by the Executive Committee. The Sustainability Report is also submitted to the Board of Directors for information.
